Culture for Health and Wellbeing: International Conference in Bielsko-Biała
Culture for Health and Wellbeing: International Conference in Bielsko-Biała, Poland
On November 14–15, Bielsko-Biała, Poland, became an international hub for discussions on the role of culture in addressing modern health challenges. The “Culture for Health and Well-being” conference brought together over 200 participants and 23 speakers from 18 countries to explore how cultural participation and artistic activities can impact mental health, support individuals in crisis, and shape modern public health approaches.
The event emphasized that culture is much more than entertainment – it can support health and foster social bonds in challenging times. Experts, artists, and practitioners shared concrete examples of how culture influences health, ranging from initiatives for youth and refugees to programs helping first responders and caregivers manage chronic stress.
The conference was also celebrated the launch of the Culture and Health platform supported by the European Union.
Key Themes and Discussions
One central theme was the impact of culture on the mental health of young people. Speakers highlighted the declining mental well-being of youth and the need for systemic support from an early age. Museums, theater activities, and art workshops can create safe spaces for young people to express complex emotions and build positive relationships.
Another focus was the role of culture in the refugee crisis. Experts and practitioners demonstrated how artistic activities can help individuals fleeing war and violence rebuild a sense of identity, express emotions, and find community in a new environment. Thanks to its universal language, art remains accessible and vital even in the most challenging conditions.
Discussions also addressed the unique needs of first responders and caregivers. These individuals, who dedicate themselves to helping others, are particularly vulnerable to high levels of stress. Artistic and cultural activities can reduce tension, restore energy, and foster psychological resilience. Experts emphasized that investing in the health of these groups yields significant benefits for society as a whole.
Practical Workshops and Activities
A notable part of the conference was its practical workshops, offering tools to support mental health and build resilience. Participants explored topics such as the neurological effects of music, creating safe creative spaces, and using humor to support individuals in crisis. Youth participants attended theater workshops focused on body awareness and emotional tension reduction.
The conference also featured cultural events, including a concert by the band Anashim, a tour of the Animated Film Studio, an exhibition at the Bielska BWA Gallery, and a recital by Jakub Derej - providing immersive experiences that highlighted the transformative power of culture.
Insights and Conclusions
The conference findings were clear: culture enhances physical, mental, and social health. The diverse practices presented, supported by data from the Culture for Health Report, confirm that cultural participation helps mitigate crises and promotes healthy lifestyles. Experts called for deeper integration of culture into education and healthcare systems, particularly in response to rising mental health challenges among youth and people in crisis.
The Bielsko-Biała conference was not only an opportunity to exchange experiences but also a call to action. Participants unanimously agreed that collaboration across culture, health, social policy, and education sectors is key to building a healthier and more resilient society.
