Bielsko-Biała as European Capital of Culture? The decision is coming soon

The excitement surrounding Bielsko-Biała's bid for the title of European Capital of Culture 2029 is growing. A special commission has already visited our city to assess the cultural potential of the candidates.

Winning the title of European Capital of Culture is a unique opportunity for any city, potentially bringing about significant cultural, social, and economic benefits. This is a flagship cultural initiative of the European Union.

The authorities of Bielsko-Biała have accepted this challenge. The benefits of the ESK 2029 title could be numerous. It’s not just about exciting events, guests from various countries, new friendships, and broadening horizons. It’s also about revitalizing abandoned city spaces, constructing modern facilities, creating attractions for children and youth, and developing new green areas. Winning would provide a major boost to Bielsko-Biała’s development through culture.

We are competing for the title with Katowice, Lublin, and Kołobrzeg. Months of intense preparations and efforts are behind us. This time was filled with remarkable projects and the creation of the city's official bid, which was outlined in the bidbook submitted to the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in Warsaw.

In recent days, our city was visited by a special commission tasked with evaluating the potential of the candidates. The experts assess a wide range of factors. They are interested in the engagement of the local community and civil society in preparing and implementing the bid, the broad and strong support from and involvement of local authorities, and both the existing and planned infrastructure. Equally important are the scope and quality of activities promoting cultural diversity, along with a clear and coherent vision and strategy for the program.

Bielsko-Biała has such a vision. Emphasizing its history, tradition, and cultural diversity as the “City of Weaves,” we are striving for Wellbeing – a modern city where everyone can live well. The decision on awarding the title will be made on September 25.
